No screen, no menu, just one dial and a light bar. The Voopoo Drag Q is set almost entirely by touch, which works well once you know the right moves. How many presses switch it on, which coil goes in first, and why does the bar flash red? Shop listings do not always agree, right down to the size of the pod. This guide takes each step in order, from the first charge to reading the warning lights.

Voopoo Drag Q, how to use it in brief

The Voopoo Drag Q switches on and off with five quick presses of its button. It locks itself after five minutes without use, and three presses or a simple draw wake it up. The notched dial sets the airflow and the wattage together, while the light bar shows the remaining charge and flags any fault.

Before the first puff, you charge the battery, fill the pod, let the coil soak, then pick a notch on the dial. Each step is covered below, with a table of the ITO coils and another for the light codes.

What comes in the box, and the real pod capacity

Retailers list the same contents, with the device, the ITO-X pod, a USB-C cable and two coils, an ITO-M3 at 1.2 ohm and an ITO-M0 at 0.5 ohm. The ohm measures the coil’s electrical resistance, and the lower the value, the more wattage it needs.

On the device side, Voopoo’s spec sheet gives a 1250 mAh built-in battery, an output of 8 to 25 W and support for coils from 0.3 to 3 ohm. The battery is not removable, so there is no separate cell to buy.

Then there is capacity. Many listings quote a 3.5 ml pod, yet the manufacturer’s sheet separates two versions, 3.5 ml for the standard model and 2 ml for the TPD version. In the UK, refillable tanks and pods are capped at 2 ml, so the TPD version is the one sold here. The figure on the box is the one to trust.

Setting up the Drag Q for the first time

Four steps stand between the box and the first puff. The order matters most for the coil, which has to be soaked with e-liquid before it is heated.

Charge the battery through the USB-C port

The USB-C port sits under the device, and several retailers state that it accepts up to 2 A. While charging, the light bar flashes green, then stays green once the battery is full. Because the port is underneath, the kit charges lying on its side.

Fill the ITO-X pod from the top

Unscrew the top cap, the upper part that carries the mouthpiece. A silicone seal appears with three openings. The centre one is the chimney, the channel the vapour rises through, and it must never take any liquid, or the coil will flood. Pour through one of the two side openings, then screw the top cap back on fully.

Let the coil soak

A new coil holds dry cotton. Firing it too soon scorches that cotton and leaves a burnt taste that will not go away. Retailers advise waiting ten to fifteen minutes after filling. One retailer’s review also suggests putting a few drops of e-liquid on the visible cotton before fitting the coil.

Switch on, lock and unlock

Five quick presses of the button switch the kit on, and the same move switches it off. After five minutes of inactivity it locks itself to avoid firing by accident, and three presses or a draw unlock it. From then on it fires either from the button or from a simple draw.

Setting the dial on the Voopoo Drag Q

The notched dial under the pod is the main control on the Voopoo Drag Q. Voopoo describes it as a synchronised setting, with a soft tick at each notch.

One move for two settings

Turning the dial to the right opens the airflow and raises the wattage in the same movement, according to two published reviews that agree. Turning it left tightens the draw and lowers the wattage. The device detects the coil fitted and keeps the output within that coil’s range, with no maths for you to do.

At the first notches, the draw is tight, a mouth-to-lung style (MTL) where the vapour is held in the mouth before being inhaled. Further round, it opens towards RDL, a restricted direct-lung draw that feels airier.

Adjust the air without changing the wattage

Two retailers describe a trick missing from most listings. Hold the button down while you turn the dial, and only the airflow moves while the wattage stays where it is. It lets you tighten the draw without lowering the heat, or open it without raising it.

Choosing and changing an ITO coil

The ITO-X pod takes the four coils of the ITO range. The value you pick sets the draw before you even touch the dial, and swapping one needs no tools.

The right value for your draw

Voopoo gives each coil a wattage range and a draw style. The figures below come from its spec sheet.

CoilResistanceWattageDraw
ITO-M00.5 ohm18 to 25 WRDL
ITO-M10.7 ohm14 to 18 Wloose MTL
ITO-M21.0 ohm10 to 14 WMTL
ITO-M31.2 ohm8 to 12 Wtight MTL

These small coils with dense cotton generally suit a thinner e-liquid, 50/50 or richer in propylene glycol, better than a mix heavy in glycerine. Our guide to e-liquid base explains those ratios.

Replace the coil step by step

Pull the pod off the device, then pull the old coil out of its seat. Push the new one in firmly, since it has no thread. Refit the pod, fill it and give the coil its soaking time.

Voopoo rates an ITO coil at about ten refills. On a 2 ml pod, that comes to around 20 ml of e-liquid. A burnt taste or e-liquid that has gone flat is the sign it needs changing.

Reading the Voopoo Drag Q light bar and fault codes

The light bar on the side shows battery level by colour, green above 60%, blue between 25 and 60%, red below 25%. One shop puts the switch to red at 30%, but most sources give 25%. Its flashes form a small code, which two retailers describe in the same way.

Red, five flasheslow batteryrecharge
Red, ten flashesshort circuitreplace the coil

A puff held too long is also cut off automatically for safety. If the kit does not react at all and no code appears, our guide on what to do when a vape won’t turn on goes through the checks in order.

Looking after the pod and avoiding leaks

Voopoo fits the ITO-X pod with four silicone rings. Keeping it dry still depends on how you fill it, since a drop poured into the chimney floods the coil.

Wipe the underside of the pod and the top of the device now and then with dry kitchen paper, especially after filling. Refill before the level drops below the coil’s openings, because cotton that runs dry burns quickly. A top cap that is not screwed down fully is the first thing to check if e-liquid appears around the mouthpiece.

FAQ

The questions that come up once the Drag Q is in hand, beyond the basic settings.

How can you see the wattage without a screen?

The light bar acts as a gauge. According to Voopoo’s spec sheet, it shows the output in real time, and it lights up higher or lower as you turn the dial. It gives no figure in watts, only a relative level.

Why does the pod barely draw on the first notch?

The tightest position almost closes the airflow. A review published by another retailer notes that the draw stops at the lowest end of the dial. Moving up a notch or two brings back a tight but usable draw.

Where is the air inlet?

It is a crescent-shaped slot between the top of the device and the base of the pod. That position is designed so your fingers cannot block it, however you hold the kit.

How does the pod stay on the device?

It is not magnetic. Small spring-loaded metal balls around its base hold it firmly, according to two retailers. The pod comes off with a pull and goes back on with a push.

Can you use nic salt e-liquids in the Drag Q?

Yes, with a 1.0 or 1.2 ohm coil at low wattage, the pairing Voopoo links to its highest nicotine strengths. The strengths on its international sheet go beyond the UK limit, though. In the UK, nicotine-containing e-liquid is capped at 20 mg/ml and sold in bottles of no more than 10 ml.

Voopoo Drag Q set up right, the steps to remember

The Voopoo Drag Q takes only a few minutes to learn, as long as the steps come in order. Charge it, fill it without touching the chimney, let the coil soak, then pick a notch. The dial does the rest, and holding the button lets you adjust the air alone. The light bar tells you almost everything about the kit’s state, once you know its codes.

To compare with another pod kit from the same brand, this time with a screen, our guide to the Argus G2 and its mini versions sets out the differences between models. Knowing the basic moves on the Voopoo Drag Q, as on any pod kit, remains the best way to get a steady result from it.
